Wander wrong paths, get lost in the process. James thought he knew where he was going, but sometimes memories are as made up as a dream. Every path led to another, crisscrossing crossroads taking him to dead ends. Physically the garden hadn’t changed, but he had; it was no longer a playground paradise where a boy, now a man, could go to indulge in mischievous games. He let his mind wander, and in so doing, it led him straight to the statue at the center of her waterless pool.

“Hello, old friend.” A breeze picked up and a swirl of leaves encircled her. “Are you in there still or not?” A flying kite’s tail of titmice and thrushes twisted and turned in the air, settling upon the statue’s head and shoulders. “Sharon is going to walk by and when she does, I need you to sprinkle a little fairy dust on her, enough to plant a subtle glow in the heart so that when she looks at me, she sees what I see in her. You’ll do that for me, won’t you?” The statue didn’t answer, the birds fluttered away. James left down the path to the garden’s center where he would regain his bearings.
